Overwhelmed? Create a checklist

When your child is overwhelmed, help her create a checklist of all the things she needs to do to help her regain a sense of control.

  1. Write it all down. Get everything she needs to do out of her head (and assignment book and online portal) and down onto paper (or whiteboard).
  2. Prioritize the list. What needs to be accomplished now (and why) and what can move further down the list (and why)?
  3. Break each of the tasks down into component parts to make the tasks far less overwhelming than she originally anticipated.
  4. Get started! Once she begins to cross items off her list she’ll start feeling more accomplished and in control.
