Tip of the Week

Take advantage of extra help

Most teachers are available during organized extra help blocks after school (and many make themselves available during the day if students ask!), yet students very rarely take advantage. There are many benefits for a student to meet with his teachers: it can help clarify confusing material, he can get study tips prior to an exam, he will gain self-confidence and strengthen self-advocacy skills, and he will earn the teacher’s confidence that he’s trying and that he cares. Even one after school session a week to start is a great first step. If you can help him over the first hurdle, over time he’ll learn how valuable that support can be and he will, at some point, advocate for it on his own.
