Following Multi-Step Directions Takes Practice!

For students who have difficulty following multi-step directions, a list of directions may sound like a complete blur and jumble of words. “Please put on your sneakers, get your lunch off the kitchen counter, make sure you have your water bottle, and meet me in the front hall.” That’s a lot to remember! Here are two ways to practice strengthening this skill:

  1. Give your child one direction at a time. Once your child is successful and gains confidence by accomplishing that first direction consistently, add a second step and then a third.
  2. Ask your child to repeat the direction(s) back to you to ensure she’s heard it and understands the task.
If you meet your child where she is, you’ll get better results and less frustration on both sides.
